{"id":52304,"date":"2021-02-28T22:59:58","date_gmt":"2021-02-28T22:59:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/?page_id=52304"},"modified":"2021-04-28T19:11:11","modified_gmt":"2021-04-28T19:11:11","slug":"wpa","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/wpa\/","title":{"rendered":"WPA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; min_height=&#8221;561.1px&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||24px|||&#8221;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-50px||||false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;||8px|||&#8221;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h1>WORKS PROGRESS ADMINISTRATION<\/h1>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Works Progress Administration (WPA) was a relief program created by Franklin <span>Roosevelt during the Great Depression to provide work for the unemployed.\u00a0 One part of\u00a0the WPA, called the Federal Art Project (FAP), employed s<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span>everal of the artists that came to Monhegan after WWII.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/zero-mostel\/\">Zero Mostel<\/a><\/strong> taught drawing and painting at the 92nd Street Young Men and Young Hebrew Association and gave gallery lectures at the Museum of Modern Art as\u00a0part of the art teaching division.\u00a0 In fact, Charlie Martin, another Monhegan artist, was Zero&#8217;s WPA supervisor<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/presentation\/d\/1wokVv1hoQsK5RUNEv-zem_EcHEofd8Dm\/edit#slide=id.p41\">.<\/a>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/demartini\/\">Joe DeMartini<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/farruggio\/\">Remo Farruggio<\/a><\/strong> worked in the easel division, in which artists received a stipend to work in their studios and submit paintings to the government. Remo was one of two artists to be given an FAP sponsored solo exhibition. <a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/michael-loew\/\"><strong>Michael Loew<\/strong><\/a> worked first in the easel division, and then in the mural division and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/jo-levy\/\"><strong>Jo Levy<\/strong><\/a> worked for the\u00a0 sculpture division.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/hantman\/\"><strong>Murray Hantman<\/strong><\/a><strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/henry-kallem\/\">Henry Kallem<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/nicholas-luisi\/\"><strong>Nicholas Luisi<\/strong><\/a> also found employment through the Federal Art Project.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_image src=&#8221;https:\/\/monheganmuseum.org\/postwarmodernism\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/artist-group-shot-for-web-version-3.jpg&#8221; alt=&#8221;Joe DeMartini, Zero Mostel, Herb Kallem and Mike Loew.
