2020: Wintering Over: Year-round in Maine
In recognition of the bicentennial of Maine’s statehood the Monhegan Museum mounted an exhibition of works by artists who lived year-round in Maine for a significant portion of their careers. Although thousands of artists have painted Monhegan during the summer season, only a small number have remained after the exodus of the summer visitors and thus had the opportunity to see the quieter side of the island. This exhibition focused on those artists who chose to stay in Maine, finding their subject matter in the local fishermen, dramatic weather, and snow-covered scenery.
