To Monhegan, With Love:
The Susan Bateson and Stephen S. Fuller Collection
July 1, 2026 – September 30, 2026
Edward Potthast (1857-1927), Lavender Cottage, 1926, Oil on board, 12 x 16 in.
Over the past twenty years Susan Bateson and Stephen Fuller have pursued their shared passion of collecting artwork created on, or inspired by, Monhegan Island. Together they have gathered a body of work that spans 150 years of artist rendered scenes, tales of the island over time in all seasons, weather, and motifs. United by place, this magnificent collection allows one to travel through time, to view changes in the landscape, the fishery, and the village, to be a spectator of card games, artists painting, swimmers frolicking at the beach, and fishermen tending their gear.
To Monhegan, With Love: The Susan Bateson and Stephen S. Fuller Collection contains eighty-nine paintings and one sculpture that have been gifted, or are promised gifts to the Monhegan Museum. This transformative gift is the largest, in terms of number of works, of artists, breadth, and value that the Museum has ever received.
Included in this diverse grouping are masterworks by George Bellows, Constance Cochrane, James Fitzgerald, Robert Henri, Elena Jahn, Rockwell Kent, Zero Mostel, Edward Potthast, Edward Redfield, Reuben Tam, and forty others.
This collection will be on display in its entirety during the summer of 2026, throughout the Assistant Keeper’s House Gallery and the Keeper’s House history displays on Lighthouse Hill, as well as at the Kent-Stoddard-Fitzgerald Studio on Horn’s Hill. It will likely never be mounted in one all-encompassing exhibition across all three venues again.
