THREAT OF WAR

In the years leading up to the United States involvement in World War II the conflict in Europe was felt even on Monhegan. Naval vessels could be seen conducting sea trials in the waters off Monhegan, the mailboat displayed an American flag prominently painted on the hull to be visible to submarines, and islanders expressed anti-Hitler sentiments at the 1940 Gymkhana.
