WAR BEGINS

The United States formally entered World War II on December 11, 1941. The island’s young men began enlisting in the armed forces, mailboats were conscripted for government service, the lighthouse was dimmed, and Coast Guard troops patrolled the back side of the island at night watching for enemy vessels.
