WAR IS OVER

Islanders celebrated the news that the war was over with a spontaneous parade through the village and a service of thanks at the Monhegan Community Church. Several of the men who served returned to the island with their new brides and began their careers as fishermen, storekeepers, and builders. In the years following the war the island population swelled with new babies, social activities resumed, and the summer community flourished once more.
