WAR YEARS

During the war the summer community diminished as fewer people traveled, cameras were prohibited on Monhegan and in many other coastal locations. Social activities on the island were rare, and the teacher held school in her home due to heating oil shortages. The construction of homes and cottages that had been steady since the early 1900s ceased completely.
